Our centre is a small and friendly family-owned place where students of all nationalities learn quickly through our modern and intensive methods. The atmosphere is very informal and relaxed which will help you especially with your spoken English. The groups are small so we can give you a lot of personal attention.
The English Language Centre (Torbay) was founded in 1974 by us, Peter and Francisca. We chose the lively town of Torquay in Devon as our location because of the beautiful coast and beaches, it is close to Dartmoor National Park and the fascinating city of Exeter. The mild climate played a role too! Now with nearby Exeter Airport and Bristol Aiport, which are served by Flybe and EasyJet respectively, it has become so much easier to get here.

Over the years we have been fortunate to meet many students of all ages and different cultures. As one bright student once said to us, ‘You are always travelling’. He was right!
We still really enjoy teaching, it does not matter if you are a total beginner or you want to take the Cambridge Proficiency examination – we like the challenge and will do all we can to help you.

For a long time The English Language Centre (Torbay) was situated in Torquay but in 2003 we moved to a lovely village, called Ipplepen, just outside Torquay. The lessons are just as intensive but here we can work outside in the garden ....weather permitting, of course, and we think no English course is complete without a (free) cup of tea every morning!
Our students are still accommodated in host families or flats in Torquay itself as most people prefer to live in a town. Transport is not a problem: see More Information for further details.
