If you are interested in learning English quickly in a small school on the beautiful south coast of England then The English Language Centre (Torbay), just outside Torquay, is a good place to come to. Many foreigners think that London = UK and they do not realise what a fabulous island the UK actually is. Torquay is located in a truly lovely part of the UK, with breathtaking scenery, good beaches, a great area for all kinds of sport, towns and cities with all the shops, cinemas and theatres your heart desires and more. If you still want to have the London experience it is only just over two and a half hours from here by train.
Two other things that surprise many students are the food and the climate. Our host families may not cook the same food you get at home but students have told us again and again that they were surprised how good English food is. As for the climate, we are fortunate to have a very mild climate so it never gets very cold, not even in winter. You will find many palm trees in Torquay and here at school we grow our own lemons!
So what can you expect at The English Language Centre?
We teach total beginners, students taking examinations, business people and those who simply want to learn (more) English for their own pleasure. Whilst most students fall in the 16 – 35 age group it is never too late to learn a language: our oldest ‘beginner’ was a Hungarian lady of 81!
The atmosphere is very relaxed as we believe that people learn more quickly when they are not afraid to make mistakes. Learning can be fun and a sense of humour is important! All the usual skills such as speaking, writing, grammar and listening are covered and if you take an exam you stand a good chance of passing it as our exam pass rate of over 85% shows.
There are on average 4 students in a group but in summer this increases to an average of 6-8 students. When it is warm enough we like to teach in the garden as you can see from the pictures in the gallery. Even though our classes are small, our prices are very reasonable.
The English Language Centre (Torbay) is now based in Ipplepen, a lovely village just outside Torquay, but most students live in host families or flats in Torquay. Whilst some students prefer to bring their own transport we suggest that it is a good idea to take advantage of the local transport system. At our centre you can buy discounted bus tickets, not only to get you to school but also for use in the area for sightseeing and getting around locally. To make it quicker to get to school we have a meeting point from where we pick students up. More details will be supplied when you book your course.
At the end of your course we issue you with a certificate to show what level you have reached in your studies.
