The Area

Attractions and what to do here.

There are so many things to do in and around Torquay it is hard to know where to begin. The best advice is to have a look at our regional website at: www.englishriviera.co.uk which will have not only all the attractions, but also dates for special events you may want to visit.
Certainly worth a visit are the following suggestions:
Paignton Zoo www.paigntonzoo.org.uk
Kents Cavern www.kents-cavern.co.uk
The Eden Project www.edenproject.com
and the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth www.national-aquarium.co.uk and don’t forget the miles of beaches and coves to investigate.
Speaking of investigating, if you like reading detective stories, you will certainly have heard of Dame Agatha Christie . She was perhaps the world’s most famous mystery and crime writer. You may not know she was born in Torquay and lived much of her life in the area. Torquay Museum houses the Agatha Christie. Gallery and her Devon holiday home with its beautiful gardens overlooking the River Dart at Greenway, is open to the public for much of the year.
Getting out and about is easy and your spare time can be filled with interesting visits and outings. We have contacts with a company that provides excursions out of our area and we can let you know when special trips are available. Most popular are Bath, Stonehenge, The Eden Project and day trips to Cornwall.
Fans of steam railways will probably enjoy a coastal ride with Paignton and Dart Valley Steam Railway. www.pdsr.co.uk

What kinds of sports are available?

Depending on the time of year most sports can be catered for. A new hot favourite is kite surfing which is hugely popular along our coast. If this is not your idea of fun what about one of the following?
Tennis, Golf, Swimming, Sailing, Surfing, Wind-surfing, Horse riding, Bowling, Fishing, Canoeing, Basketball, Scuba Diving and Mountain Biking.
If you decide you’d like to do everything on foot with a rucksack then there is a place you should know about called ‘Torquay Backpackers’. The rooms are shared self-catering. There is a kitchen area, a dining room and a communal area www.torquaybackpackers.co.uk

Torquay by Night

Torquay comes alive by night and there are clubs to suit all tastes. Live music is easy to find as is a disco or pub with a DJ. If you plan to make a whole evening out with your friends or family then you can eat out at one of the harbourside cafes or go to a chic restaurant and follow that with a film or show at one of the seaside theatres.

If you want something a bit different during the summer months, you can have a scary evening with food and a cave tour at Kents Cavern. It is not for the faint hearted though so be prepared for a lot of shocks and screams!!

Whatever you choose to do, we are sure you will have a great time here.
